Tonight Pam, Jeff L, Laura, Me and my kids went to the open mic night at the Coffee Ward. It was fun, not everyone was good but a few were pretty good. This would be a great venue to share the Gospel in a dramatic scripture reading, praise song or something like that. What do you think?
Looking forward to Sunday…
For the next 4 weeks we will have the Westfalls in our class. Kari Windon is teaching the little ones and Laura (7/15) , Jackie (7/22), Barb (7/29), and Pam (8/5) will help. This falls under the edification goals in our class. This was a very thoughtful idea (I think it was Kari’s) to give the Westfalls a break and give them a chance to have some donuts and us a chance to know them a little better.
Remember this week’s class will be a planning time for the Movie Night- Facing the Giants. I will post a plan for our class time. Pray and think about what we’re going to do. I hope to post the letter to our sister churches along with the ad in the Towne Crier.
Pam and I were talking last night about how things in the church seem to be just fitting together like puzzle pieces. Jackie gets a job with a paper, different planning groups come up with similar ideas for programs and Pastor’s messages are paving the way to changes in the body. The Holy Spirit works! (At least when we let Him)
Jackie and Doug are going to place an ad in the Towne Crier for the Movie and Bonfire night (to show Facing the Giants, Aug 17 6:30 PM). What a blessing, now the real work begins. Next Sunday (July 14th) we will spend the class time praying and planning for the Movie Family Night. So pray and think about what challenges we will face and what we need to overcome them.
See you Sunday…
July 14 we will have a pot luck at the McCormick’s and we are inviting the Connell’s to join us. So sign up and bring a dish or dessert. Looking forward to a good time.
Here’s the plan: this post will stay at the top of our blog to be a reminder of the schedule of events. The tentative date is Aug 17, 7 PM. I will check with Lancaster Fire Department about the bonfire and what permits are needed if any. Jackie will be our “scheduler” for the promotional schedule. Next week we will take volunteers for specific tasks; radio interviews, visiting our sister churches, talking to football coaches, passing out fliers or praying (which is the most important task of all).
So, stay tuned, I’ll keep you updated as best I can.
I think our movie night went over well. We learned a lot of what needs to be done better and we also learned what we can do well. Better advertising, is the major thing and I can take credit for that shortfall. We did very well with the hospitality and treats, at least everyone thought so. Maybe a good plan for next time is to plan for a gathering after the movie. Maybe a bon-fire or desserts for everyone. The bon-fire would appeal to the youth and we could do it at the church directly after the movie.
The peliminary idea iss to show the next movie a few weeks before the High School football season starts.Scheduling will bew tough, camp, vacations and such. But we must remember it’s for guests and our sister churches.
Any ideas feel free to comment or email me.
Today I should get a license package for the movie. It has a DVD that has a trailer and handouts. I will get them to Kari so she can bring it to church. The trailer can be played Sunday either AM or PM depending on Pastor’s wishes. There will be posters and handbills, so make good use of the materials.
Here’s the agenda;
6:45-7:00 Music and handouts of the Popcorn and candy
7:00-05 short intro (more on that later)
7:05-8:56 movie with a discussion time of 10-15 after the movie. So we will probably wrap the movie up by
9:30. There is clean-up to keep in mind, Jackie said she would bring carpet cleaner and we can take car of the trash and vacuum up when everyone is gone.
Here’s the tag line: Never give up. Never back down. Never lose faith.
The intro short talk should be less than 5 minutes. Here’s what I would like the presenter (Tim Canterbury) to include: the tag line, ask everyone to watch for the turning point in the movie for Grant and for the football team. (No spoilers please) As one last thing you can ask the audience to make a mental note of their favorite parts for discussion after the movie. Then as the last thing tell them about a piece of movie trivia- how the movie was basically sponsored by a church and made for less than 100,000 dollars. Also notice who makes a cameo appearance (answer-no spoiler please- Mark Richt, coach of the University of Georgia Bulldogs).
Follow up (Doug), this is a little tougher and will have to be played more by ear or heart. Start (unless you feel lead differently) with the trivia answers of who was the cameo, then what was the turning point for Grant and why, follow up conversation then the team’s turning point and discussion. From here as you are lead we can tell the audience we are available for prayer and anything else anyone needs.
We need to make a game plan (pun intended) this Sunday for our movie night. We need to consider the following.
- Who from our class will be there?
- Who will MC?
- What kinds of treats will we have?
- Are we ready to deal with the counseling? if necessary.
What we do know:
- It’s at 7 PM
- It’s Friday April 20
- It’s going to be in the auditorium on the large screen
- It’s a great movie
- I’m gonna have a good time!
- I’ll buy the movie
- It’s for all ages and we will direct our focus towards the youth.

Dear Whitesells,
You probably recieved a package yesterday with a rambling note (mine). Our ABF (Sunday School) class has goals this year that include projects to edify others. One of our projects is to show the movie Facing Giants to the youth. We also wanted to do something for you so we decided to put a Movie Night in a Box. We hope you will enjoy the package (and forgive us all the sugar we sent you). We pray for you often and miss you.

Facing the Giants, popcorn, candy and cards for the Whitesell Family is our project for this week. Our girls are going to make cards and we will find a card to send with the care package. So feel free to have your kids make or buy cards for Warren, Karen and the kids and don’t forget your own. I have also talked to Jill and Pastor and they will be sending cards along with our class cards.
This is a cool project that I cannot wait to complete. We need to decide Sunday on how to package it. We could send it box within a box and tell them to only open it when it’s Friday night and they have time for a family night or we could let them just open the box and plan the evening themselves. Either way it’ll be fun to complete this project. I would also like to take a digital picture of our class with our kids so we could include the picture with the package. We can do this after church this Sunday. Then I can just go to Walgreen’s to print it out before we send the care package.
If anyone has more ideas to go along with what we have so far please feel free to add the ideas to the blog. Remember you can never have enough candy or popcorn (a kids point of view) to go with a movie.
